Curriculum

Expecting the Best is targeted toward high beginner/low intermediate ESL students.  Lessons teach a variety of functional skills and are linked to CASAS objectives.  We asked 165 ESL students and health department patients with limited English skills across North Carolina what health topics would be most interesting to them.  Health care and nutrition were top choices.  We then asked adult educators and health and human service professionals which instructional areas would be most useful to develop within those categories based on observed needs.

The lessons employ a range of learning methods including conversation, role playing, reading, and games.  There are several activities within each lesson giving instructors the flexibility to choose the ones that best meet the needs of their class. To ensure that health information is presented in an accurate and meaningful way, medical professionals reviewed each lesson.

Lessons

Health Care - Seven lessons that teach skills such as how to communicate in health care settings, how to find and schedule services, what to expect at a health visit, understanding medical instructions, and more.

Nutrition - Seven lessons that focus on healthy food choices, grocery shopping, and cooking.
